How to Fix a Blurry Picture on a Samsung HDTV

One of the most common questions today from owners of HDTV systems is what they can do to rid themselves of the blurry picture they see on their HDTV. After all, they bought it because HDTVs are supposed to have crystal-clear pictures - allowing them to see the drops of sweat running off the athletes as they perform on screen.

The answer to the problem of a fuzzy picture on an LCD hdtv like the Samsung 40 lcd hdtv is fairly simple but it sounds a little complicated: One of the problems is perhaps the signal you are getting from your cable company is a low definition 480i signal, with a resolution of only 640 by 480. In most cases, your LCD TV is a high definition TV with a resolution capability of 1366 by 768, 1440 by 900, or 1920 by 1080. The mismatch between the standard cable or OTA signal resolution and the TV resolution that causes the fuzzy picture. Most HDTVS have this problem if you live in an area where broadcast stations are still sending out lo-res signals.

However, when you are viewing digital channels, the picture will also look fuzzy. Once again, the signal your hdtv is receiving is a digitized standard (480i or 480p) transmission (kind of a 'fake' digital picture), not a true digital high definition transmission. So how do you fix it?

Here are three ways:

1. Reduce the picture size to 4:3 2. Use the Sharpness function 3. If you have a cable box, change the connections

Reduce the size of the picture to 4:3:

Change it by pressing the P.Size button on your remote until 4:3 appears on the screen. The 4:3 picture has black or grey borders on the left and right;

Use the Sharpness Function:

For most Samsung LCD TVs do this:

1. Turn on the TV 2. Press the Menu button on your remote. The Main menu appears. 3. Press the Up or Down arrow button on your remote to select Picture, and then press the Enter button. The Picture menu appears. 4. Press the Up or Down arrow button on your remote to select Custom, and then press the Enter button. The Custom menu appears. 5. Use the Up or Down button on your remote to select Sharpness.

Note: On some Samsung LCD TVs, you use the Enter button to select Sharpness.

6. Use the Right arrow button on your remote to increase the sharpness. 7. Press the Exit button to exit.

What happens if you own a cable box?

You probably have the HDTV connected to your cable box using the Composite (standard, AV, Cable) or S-video connections. These are the lowest quality connections.

To fix your picture, connect your Samsung LCD TV to your cable box using the Component (Pb, Pr, and Y) connections. If you have digital cable or you receive over-the-air digital programs, add a digital DVI or HDMI cable connection.

Component and DVI connections carry video only. If you choose the Component or DVI connections, you must connect the Left and Right Audio outs on your cable box to the matching Left and Right audio in jacks on your TV. HDMI carries both video and audio. With HDMI cable, you only need to connect it.

DVI or HDMI with a set-top-box or cable box requires you to set the output resolution of the cable box to 480p or higher. DVI and HDMI inputs usually do not accept 480i (standard analog) signals.

What happens if your cable box doesn't have Component, DVI, or HDMI connections? Best thing to do in that case is contact your cable company to see if they will supply you with boxes that have these kinds of connections built in. Connecting using DVI or HDMI will only help on the digital channels.

Every cable box is a little different but if you connect using DVI or HDMI, you will need to connect to the box using Composite (AV) or S-Video connections to receive standard, analog stations. Most boxes upload and change 480i signals to at least 480p, which works well with DVI and HDMI. Others don't work so well so pay attention to what you're doing.

When you add connections, make sure you use the 'Source' button on your remote to change to the correct video source when you watch your TV.
