LCD HDTV Monitors

LCD stands for liquid crystal display and it is one of the most widely used display technologies in use today. In fact you probably come in contact with LCDs practically every day because they are used in clocks, digital watches, CD players, calculators, laptops, and many other devices. LCD is also becoming quite popular for use in the new HDTVs for image display. LCD HDTV and plasma HDTV are overtaking the long standard cathode ray tube televisions of the past and present, and are set to become the standard display of the future.

How does LCD work?

LCD or liquid crystal display is aptly named because it consists of liquid crystals situated between polarized glass. These liquid crystals do not have the capacity to actually create light but instead they control the light that passes through them by blocking it to varying degrees depending upon the electrical charge that is applied. This characteristic is why LCD is referred to as transmissive. The display on the LCD HDTV is divided up into millions of tiny little squares which are known as pixels and each of these is divided into three yet smaller pixels containing the colors blue, green, and red. As light passes through these tiny pixels of different color, an unlimited color palate and intensity can be produced.

What are the advantages of LCD?

One big advantage of LCD HDTV is that it offers a very thin display so that it is a space saver. They are also very efficient and use little electricity when compared to plasma or CRT so they are cheaper to operate. The LCD lasts longer than a plasma display and produces incredibly sharp and brilliant images without the risk of burn in.

What are the disadvantages of LCD?

The major disadvantage of LCD HDTV is that it is more expensive than rear projection TVs or plasmas. LCD technology has also limited the screen size in the past but newer models are becoming larger. LCD also exhibits an phenomenon which is known as ghosting which is motion trails created by fast moving images on the display. Visibility can be reduced when viewing an LCD screen at an angle greater than 20 degrees from center. However, advancements are constantly underway and LCD technology is continually being improved upon.

LCD televisions are generally high definition ready so they are called LCD HDTVs. But you can still view an analog signal through the LCD if you have an NTSC tuner. An HDTV tuner is required to receive the HDTV signal.

LCD HDTVs are a popular choice for home theaters as the images displayed are crisp and vivid. When shopping for your HDTV, you should discuss your viewing set up at home such as the size of the room and angle of viewing, with the salesperson who can help you decide if LCD is right for you.
